Merry & Bright

With the holiday season in full swing, we profile some of our favourite companies bringing candles and home fragrances to Showcase in January.

Rathbornes 1488

RATHBORNES MASER

It’s hard to believe that Rathbornes 1488 was established in Dublin city when Botticelli was still painting his extraordinary works of art. As one of the oldest registered companies in the world, it is safe to say that Rathbornes 1488 truly has an extraordinary pedigree.

The company has seen it’s fortunes wax and wane over the years and now, instead of creating tallow candles for Ireland’s streets and churches, the company creates luxurious scented candles for discerning customers in some of Ireland’s most prestigious stores.

This year saw an exciting collaboration with Maser - one of Ireland’s most well loved contemporary artists - while January will see the release of a new woody fragrance by the brand inspired by Dublin’s Phoenix Park entitled Dublin Retreat.

FieldDay

FieldDay

FieldDay was born in 2002 when Alix Mulholland was inspired to capture and bottle the scents of the Irish countryside. Now, 20 years in business and an award-winning entrrepreneur, it's safe to say that Mulholland has come a long way from making rose petal perfume in jam jars and arranging endless bunches of wild flowers at her mum’s kitchen table.

Working in what she describes as her 'dream job' Mulholland now works out of FieldDay - a converted mushroom factory in rural Co. Down where she and her team create a wide range of products from scented candles to diffusers, wax melts to accessories. Inspired by the Irish countryside, the company places a strong emphasis on nature and sustainability while producing a range that includes sweet candles in jam jars, a sophisticated Christmas range and products inspired by everything from the meadows to the sea.

Rowan Beg

ROWAN BEG

Rowan Beg candles are designed and hand-poured in small batches in the brand's Connemara studio in the west of Ireland. The brand uses polished concrete jars and eco-friendly packaging - the jars being designed to be reused and enjoyed for years to come. Rowan Beg’s diffusers are also a little different in that they are designed so that the base is purchased once and the refills (which come in recyclable glass test tubes) are interchangeable.

The Urban Collection is edgy, young and sophisticated - made with sustainably sourced soy wax, high quality fragrance oils and cotton wicks. The Connemara Collection is inspired by the founder’s Connemara childhood, memories of her grandfather’s pipe smoke and designed for anyone who’s missing home or Connemara.

Rowan Beg also produces a lovely range of scented Christmas decorations and solid wax air fresheners decorated with dried flowers.
