Sustainability is trending at Showcase 2023

More and more customers are seeking products that align to their ethics as well as their aesthetics and the demand for sustainable, ethical and local products has never been stronger.

A study on retail trends for 2023 published this week by Shopify reports that shoppers aren’t just aware of the price tag but that "environmental, social, and governance concerns influence about half of global consumers".

The study found that shoppers want to support business that are ethical and that have sustainable supply chains, however it also showed that, in a world where supply chain issues are increasingly challenging for both manufacturers and trade buyers, consumers are switiching to competitors who have the products they want in stock when they want them.

With short supply chains, local sourcing and strong acumen in terms of sustainable and ethical credentials, Irish brands and businesses are well places to satisfy the demands of both retail consumers and trade buyers.

Here we introduce you to just five such brands at Showcase 2023.

Kopper Kreation

Kopper Kreation is an award-winning industrial homewares brand that uses reclaimed and recycled materials to create unique and eye-catching homewares products. Founder Emmet Bosonnet holds an honours degree in engineering and has always been interested in industrial design as well as in practical and functional product design. Inspired by all things industrial, and by finding alternative uses for things that would otherwise end up in landfill, sustainability is at the very heart of Bosonnet's designs.

Using reclaimed and recycled materials as much as possible, as well as recycled and recyclable packaging, Kopper Kreation products are all carefully handmade and designed to last a lifetime. The range includes items for the home including candlestick holders, tea light holders, vases, bookends and a very popular range of lighting. The new 'Tesla' range of lighting includes floor and table lamps which uses salvaged barbell weights and copper piping and features dimmable LED bulbs.

Hanna's Bees

Hannas Bees

Established by beekeeper Hanna Bäckmo in 2014, Hanna's Bees is a 'Hive to Home' brand driven by a passion for edible gardening, nature, colour and sustainability.

Bäckmo has several apiaries in East and South Cork with around 60 native Irish honeybee colonies producing honey, beeswax and propolis for her unique range of products which are carefully handmade. The product range includes honey-scented beeswax candles, propolis tinctures and an assortment of small-batch honeys.

One of the brand's most popular products is the beeswax wrap - a reusable and sustainable alternative to cling film, tin foil or sandwich bags when it comes to keeping food items fresh. Catering for vegan customers too, Bäckmo also makes vegan food wraps made from plant based waxes and has recently introduced a range of Irish grown wildflower seeds with pollinators in mind.

Hanna’s Bees products are available in some of Ireland’s leading artisan food and gift shops as well as health-food stores and zero waste shops. Last year, some of the brand's products were also stocked in two of Ireland's most prestigious department stores - namely Arnotts and Brown Thomas - and Bäckmo has recently garnered a number of independent stockists in the US, Canada and Europe too.
